This little volume packs a huge punch. The author distills his many years as a “colonial orphan” into a rollicking tale of international intrigue in the premises of a grand old hotel (someone dies, of course) that actually turns into a moving meditation of life and what it means to be human. Come for the exotic setting and idiosyncratic characters, and walk away with a deeper appreciation for the simpler pleasures of life that are all around us if only we stop and see and listen. The last two chapters are absolutely excellent and left me breathless. My profoundest thanks, Mr. John Webb, you are a prophet.
